I was going to write a review of the Menswear shows I saw during Fashion Week. But Holland Cotter, the Chief Art Critic for The New York Times, summed it up beautifully, in the Sunday Style Section. Juxtaposing fashion in art with a keen observation of the Spring 2012 Menswear shows made for a very “spot on “ commentary.

The menswear shows had all the important parts, Americana, Soft Tailored Suits, Classic traditional clothing reinterpreted. Themes abounded there was nautical inspired , surfing inspired , military inspired, skateboarding inspired with a dash Preppy ( well more than a dash)and celebrity inspired ( James Dean at Michael Bastien). All of it beautifully presented and in most instances very well made.

Two great quotes, I will share;

1. “The only operative politics I could detect was Lookism: as in, this looks better than that, which doesn’t inspire large ideas.”

2. “The point is, there much more out there than camouflage prints and “Happy Days” reruns.”

Fashion week, I observed random people chased by the new paparazzi the "Street Style Photographer", to be posted on the many Fashion Street Style Blogs. So perhaps the scale is equal, everyone is a celebrity. This is not a good thing. One would think that there would be so many different points of view being seen however it doesn't seem original, that is not the important point, it is Menswear, one cannot "reinvent the wheel". The wheel is good. It just doesn't seem "authentic". I prefer someone who tells me that he picks up his clothes up from the floor of his closet rather than lists the brands or the stores he bought it from.

There is a difference between a man with style and a character in a costume.

In this case a little known quote from Andy Warhol in response to his famous line "In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes. "

I'm bored with that line. I never use it anymore. My new line is "In 15 minutes everybody will be famous.":

The military theme again but .. military clothing is less about presentation and more about functionality. It is why military clothing become classic pieces that are translated in traditional and fashion oriented menswear. It is function and form at its finest.

Aitor Throup reworked designs in his archive every six months until he created his current collection based on body armour. This interesting presentation was set up like a New Orleans "funeral procession" with each dressform posed as if they were playing an instrument. However, I found some images that I love of woman that are clothed ... I love woman, beautiful woman who wear men's clothes. There does not seem to be a formula to wearing the break in a trousers or jean. I tend to like a break that covers the back of the shoe. I think the popping your kicks out look lacks vision and ruins the line of the pants. But their are naysayers on this point . These are some great examples that manage to keep some of length in the trousers without looking like you couldn't make to the tailor. However a "Bigger" guy needs to go for a more long lean, clean version of this and short guys should stay away for it entirely.
